MUTT STRUT

The 12th annual MUTT STRUT, held on April 25th, 2009, was a great success!! The Mutt Strut and Pet Fair is the annual spring fund-raiser for the Humane Society. There were prizes for walkers who raised the most money. "Proceeds benefit the animal shelter and the care of the animals awaiting new homes," says Dr. David Newell, President of the Humane Society. Mary Ashley notes the canine competitions drew a big crowd, especially with Courtney Phelps as emcee. "The high jump contests, limbo contests, and dog/owner look-alike contests brought a big smile" she said. Ashley will spend a night in the animal shelter kennel unless she raises $10,000 for the animals by the end of May(see below). So far Mary has reached 2/3 of her goal. All Mutt Strut events were held in the fountain park and courthouse area downtown.

The Humane Society, the Town of Chestertown and the Center for Environment & Society at Washington College collaborated for the "Chestertown Goes Green" campaign and Earth Day Festival. "We had people from all walks of life join together in support of clean air, land and water for the Earth and its animals," said JoAnn Fairchild of the Center.

Walkers who raised the most money at the Mutt Strut this year:

Hannah Duston (Kent School) was again our top winner. She is 8 years old and has raised the most money for the past several years for the Mutt Strut. She has a long haired Chihuahua named Guapo. The Humane Society is very grateful to Hannah and her family for all the money they have raised and the constant support they have given. Jeff and Miranda's business does our t-shirts and hats each year. Thank you Hannah, Jeff and Miranda from the animals.
