Procedures
Information is requested on an Adoption Application so that an
adoption counselor can assist you in selecting a new pet. (A sample
copy of the application is available on line and can be printed and
filled out beforehand.) All applicants will be interviewed by a staff member
to review their application and to discuss important aspects of pet ownership.
The animal's welfare is our primary consideration. The application is designed
to help us determine if the adoption is in the animal's best interest, to
assist you in finding an animal most compatible with your lifestyle, and
to further educate pet owners. Many of the animals in our shelter are there
because their previous owners did not give pet ownership thorough consideration.
The animals available for adoption came to us from a
variety of sources. All animals are examined upon entry
by the staff, and their health is monitored while at the
shelter (a veterinarian is consulted in many cases).
There is always a chance that an animal is incubating a
disease without showing any clinical signs. We will
inform adopters of all known medical conditions prior to
the adoption.
A minimum of an overnight wait from receipt of the
completed application is required prior to the release of
the animal. This time is allotted for you to think about
the commitment you are about to make; to prepare for the
new pets arrival home; for the shelter to review your
application; and to microchip the pet for future
identification purposes. When adopting a pet from the
Humane Society it will be necessary to sign an ADOPTION
CONTRACT jointly with the Society (a copy of which is
available on request).
